44 Days of Witchery, Day 10: Your Sun Sign

Capricorns like to pare things down, and take pleasure in the simple things in life. Capricorns can sometimes be rather lonely people, although we rarely let it show. We are often a little reserved—even standoffish. This is generally because we value all things practical, and we'll seldom wear our emotions on our sleeves.
To some, we come across as unimaginative, but can be enormously creative when it comes to the material world. We are generally a very capable people with a strong sense of tradition and responsibility. Turn to your Capricorn friends for help when you need to really get things done. We'll have practical advice, and we'll help you organize and manage your life a little better. Capricorns are generally good with our "word", dependable, and rather loyal people.

Practical and prudent
Ambitious and disciplined
Patient and careful
Humorous and reserved

44 Days of Witchery, Day 9: A favorite Mythological Animal

Call them fairies or fey, these little ethereal creatures are my favorite Magical beings. Whether tall, young, and angelic in appearance or short, old, and generally more troll like, each different fairy brings forth their own characteristic.
For example, I don't know what I'd do if it weren't for the help of certain brownies that come to aid me in my daily housework. And I can't help but giggle when a trickster plays a prank with my husband's keys.

44 Days of Witchery, Day 8: A Magical Place Outdoors

Black River goes through Johnson Shut-Ins in one of our Missouri State Parks. A stunning sight, one of my favorite places.

And again, my trip to Spain brought me more magical moments as well.

I hope the Goddess blesses me with the opportunity to visit many more magical places in the future.

44 Days of Witchery, Day 7: Air Element

My invocation of Air:
Guardians of the Watchtowers of the East, we do summon, stir, and call thee up to protect us in our rite. Come fill my lungs, and stir all things from the smallest blade of grass to the tallest tree. Come to us now on the cool breath of Autumn's sigh. Breathe into us the spirit of the pure joy of life. So mote it be!

Air: the sustenance of life, making pollination possible with gentle spring breezes. And capable of bringing down cities with it's destructive storms.

Air carries away your troubles, blows away strife, and carries positive thoughts to those who are far away.

44 Days of Witchery: Witchy Day #6

Favorite God: Poseidon

Being that water is my favorite element, it really is no surprise that one of my favorite deities would preside over it.
Whether you picture him as King Triton (Ariel's father on The Little Mermaid) or Percy Jackson's father (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief), one thing remains clear. Poseidon is one cool dude!
Never to be taken for granted, Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea, holds sway over storms as well as earthquakes. An equal to his brothers, Zeus and Hades, his powers are not to be taken lightly.
He could, after all bring forth a monsoon just for being mocked or ignored. But Poseidon isn't all scary. He introduced man to horses, and protected cities such as Corinth and Magna Gracea. He was also one of the caretakers of the oracle at Delphi until Apollo took over.

44 Days of Witchery: Day 5

A favorite Goddess

My favorite Goddess is Bast, a.k.a Bastet: The Egyptian Goddess of Protection and Cats.
She represents motherhood, fertility, and the hearth. Also, enlightenment, truth, and creation.

I've always been drawn to the Egyptian dieties. Bast was one of the first to call to me. I love the fierceness in which she would do anything to protect her offspring. But also, the nurturing and caring side of her too.
I suppose she is best known for her protective side, and that is why I feel so drawn to her. I have always felt it was my duty to help those around me and be the shoulder everyone leans on as well. As a wife and mother, I find myself dedicated to ensuring a good quality of life for my family.
Perhaps this poem I found describes Bast in the eyes of a husband returning home from a hunt. Do you agree?

Hail Bast! Hail Bast! Hail Bast,
coming forth from the secret place,
may there be given to me splendor
in the place of incense, herbs,
and love-joys, peace of heart in the
place of bread and beer.

Witchy Tools: Athame

The athame is used for the ceremonial purposes, i.e banishing, as well as invoking. Never to literally cut physical objects. It is said that in doing so, said athame would turn null and void of it's magical use.
It's element is fire, just as the sword is. However, the athame did not become so mainstream until Gardner introduced it.

44 days of Witchery: Witchy Day #4

A picture of nature (Water Element)

I've always considered a deep connection with water. Up until a few years ago, I had lived near a large body of water my entire life. It was my sanctuary, my place for peace. For as long as I could remember, any time I felt at odds in the world, or just needed some time to think, the soft sounds of water flowing, waves crashing, or even the glorious view of a waterfall was enough for me to forget all my troubles and get on with my life.

A little harder to do now that I'm in the Midwest, however, it's not exactly impossible to find that little bit of serenity.

This beautiful lily pond was taken at a Buddhist temple during my vacation this year to the south of Spain. It's tranquility brought me peace on what could have been a stressful vacation. (Try traveling with 2 boys under the age of 4)

These mossy rocks were also from my trip to Spain. The wonderful beaches along the Mediterranean Sea gave me such joy this year. It was truly a blessing to be able to experience their beauty.

44 Days of Witchery

Witchy day #2

A myth or story from folklore

Growing up, I was always allured by King Arthur and Guinevere. Their romance, their adventures were the stuff of dreams. But the stories I loved the most were of Avalon.
Imagine a place full of plants that produce food on their own, beautiful women that can heal with their hands, a land so luscious and peaceful and full of magic, surrounded by water.
This wonderful place is known as Avalon. A paradise described as a place where eternal spring, health, and harmony reigned. It doesn't help my allure that the island was run by women. (My inner feminist throws a fist pump in the air.)
In the stories, King Arthur was brought here when he was mortally wounded so that Morgan Le Fey and her sisters could care and heal him.
There are many stories about Avalon, and everyone of them I love.

44 Days of Witchery

Witchy Day #1

What's your witchy background?

I was born into a Catholic family, so the transition was not so smooth. To be honest, if I were to have been asked 20 years ago what I thought about Wicca, I would have scoffed , shown you the cross around my neck and backed away from you quickly. It was after all, imbedded in my head that anything other than what I was raised to believe was wrong.
But after a few years of serious soul searching, I realized I wasn't happy in my little bubble of beliefs.
I began to read about other religions and came to the conclusion that I was looking in all the wrong places. The answer really was right underneath my nose. Or, underneath my toes, shall I say. And over my head as well. It was as if a giant cloud opened up above me and showed me what I had been missing all along. I guess you can say I had an epiphany.
I knew in one moment that I was a child of our Goddess. I really don't know how else to explain it.
I do know that I am grateful for the knowledge I gained in my search for a calling. I have a deep respect for many of the Eastern religions. And the history of the mainstream religions come in handy when living in the bible belt. There's a lot of close-minded people out here that don't want to see the outside of their box. And that's ok with me. I'm not here to change them. That's not my path. I am here to learn. And learn I shall continue to do.
